GE Closing Plant in Puerto Rico
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) _ General Electric’s home electric products division will close its plant in southern Puerto Rico within 18 months and lay off about 150 workers, the company said Sunday.
Plant manager Angel Rivera told The Associated Press most operations at the plant in Juana Diaz will move to a larger factory in Acuna, Mexico. Production of industrial electricity controls will move to another plant in Puerto Rico operated by General Electric’s Industrial Systems Division.
Along with the industrial controls, the Juana Diaz plant makes extension cords, night lights and other devices for homes.
General Electric employs 3,500 people in Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory in the Caribbean.
