Undated (AP) _ JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) -A title bout between Indonesian International Boxing Federation junior bantamweight champion Ellyas Pical and Australian contender Wayne Mulholland will be held here Aug. 23, Zul Zaini, the head of the organizing committee, confirmed Wednesday.
Zaini said the fight will be promoted by Boy Bolang. Terms of the fight were agreed to in Sydney last week.Pical will receive $100,000 and Mulholland $17,000. ---
NEW YORK (AP) - Boris Becker, the first German and youngest player to win Wimbledon, has been named the Nabisco Grand Prix tennis player of the month for June.
With successive titles in the Stella Artois Grass Court Championships at the Queen’s Club and then in Wimbledon, Becker surged from 14th to fifth place in the Grand Prix point standings and from 65th in January to eighth in the ATP’s computerized singles rankings.
The 17-year-old beat eighth-seeded Kevin Curren in the Wimbledon final 6-3, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 with a booming serve and volley game.
Previous players of the month in 1985 were John McEnroe, Tim Mayotte, Anders Jarryd and Ivan Lendl. ---
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (AP) - Dave Rooney, the basketball coach at Slippery Rock University for six seasons, has resigned for personal reasons effective Aug. 23, according to Athletic Director Bill Lennox.
The Rockets had a 65-86 record under Rooney and his 1984-85 team was 8-17. Slippery Rock made two trips to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference semifinal playoffs under Rooney, named as coach before the 1979-80 season.
Rooney was the coach at Buffalo State University for one season before coming to Slippery Rock. He is a former assistant coach at Westminster, Clarion and Edinboro, all in Pennsylvania.
Lennox did not immediately announce plans to determine Rooney’s successor. ---
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) - Malaysia’s national team defeated Swansea City of the English League 3-1 in the opening match of the 29th Merdeka Anniversary soccer tournament Wednesday night.
The teams were tied 1-1 at halftime in the match played at Independence Stadium before 8,000 fans.
The tournament ends on Aug. 3, Other teams participating include the America Football Club of Brazil; Malaysia’s second team, the Tigers; and teams from Ghana, Indonesia, South Korea and Thailand.
