Renowned Violist, Music Teacher Dead At 91

ENGLEWOOD, N.J. (AP) _ Lillian Fuchs Stein, a renowned violist who taught some of the world’s best known string musicians, died Friday. She was 91.

Stein graduated with honors from the New York Institute of Musical Art in 1924.

She was the first violist to perform and record the six Bach suites written for solo cello, according to The New York Times.

She also brought her talent to the classroom. Stein claimed her first student was now-famed violinist Isaac Stern. She also taught Pinchas Zukerman.
