Hampden-Sydney 22, Davidson 19

DAVIDSON, N.C. (AP) _ Brian DeFade’s 16-yard touchdown run with 10:53 to play withstood two late Davidson rallies as Hampden-Sydney took a 22-19 victory on Saturday and snapped a three-game losing streak.

DeFade’s touchdown run capped a 62-yard, eight-play drive, and tight end Heath Spencer tossed a two-point conversion pass to wide receiver Preston Montague for the margin of victory for Hampden-Sydney (3-5).

Davidson (1-7) dropped its seventh-straight game, but not without a fight in the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats drove to the Hampden-Sydney 24, but Dunn Mileham’s 41-yard field goal hit the right upright and bounced away with 5:47 remaining. On its next possession, Davidson moved to the Tiger 25, but freshman defensive back Chuck Felder intercepted a Clif Henry pass and snuffed out the last comeback.

Both teams started freshmen at quarterback. Henry completed 22 of 38 passes for 212 yards as he played in place of sophomore Tommy Dugan.

Walt Bondurant, starting for senior Kemp Smith, hit just 4 of 10 passes for 94 yards, but one of the completions was a 68-yard scoring play to Jason Raper midway through the second quarter.
