Mt. Union Church honoring veterans with special service
The Rev. Sam McClintock, pastor of the Addison and Johnson Chapel United Methodist churches, will be the guest minister at the Historic Mt. Union Church for a service celebrating All Saints Day, Thanksgiving and Veterans Day at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Crystal Schafer will be the guest pianist. Jerry Clark, a member of the Mt. Union Church Camp No. 502 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, will play two historic musical pieces on the rope drum. These drums were used in the Revolutionary War and on through the Civil War period. The Mt. Union Sacred Harp Singers will sing a number of “Shape Note” songs.
The service is to honor the veterans in attendance. Those who have died in the last two years since the last “All Saints” service will be remembered by name. This is the last service of 2018 at the church, which dates to 1861.
After the service, the Mt. Union Church Camp will meet to plan a trip to Gettysburg for Remembrance Day.
For a number of years, the Mt. Union Church Camp 502 Auxiliary and Sons have made a pilgrimage to Gettysburg to remember camp members’ ancestors monuments where they fought in Gettysburg. Flowers will be placed at the regiments’ memorials.
Mt. Union Church is located on the corner of Mt. Union Road and Turkeyfoot Trail Road in Upper Turkeyfoot Township. For more information call 814-926-3142.
