United Way of Olmsted County promotes volunteerism in southeastern Minnesota through our Get Connected online tool. Get Connected is made available to nonprofit agencies in our region to post volunteer opportunities. This tool allows individuals to view these volunteer opportunities. On Saturday, February 23, the Science Fair for students in grades 3 through 6 will be held. We have a specific need right now for people to join the Volunteer Committee. This group helps to recruit both adult and high school volunteers to work the day of the Fair. The Volunteer Committee handles all the communications with the volunteers, helps to write the volunteer instructions, and assigns volunteers to tasks. We have an urgent need for volunteer drivers to take older adults to crucial medical appointments. As a volunteer you provide door-to-door rides for mobile seniors to medical, dental and other health related appointments. You volunteer when you are available…regularly, weekly or monthly. There is a higher demand during winter months as some clients prefer not to drive in the winter and many of our volunteers are snow birds. We sponsor a landlord tenant hotline for anyone in the community who has a question about the rights and responsibilities of rental property. We are looking for volunteers to staff the hotline. Volunteers will be provided training and will staff the hotline for a week at a time. Generally volunteers spend anywhere between 1 and 3 hours a week returning calls. You will support the efforts of the Site Coordinator as well as fellow volunteers and clients during the food distribution shift. We are looking to add some toddler playtime to our activity schedule at Assisi Heights for the retired Sisters of St Francis. If you and your preschooler would like to join us for an hour or two of puppets, peek-a-boo, puzzles, and stacking toys once or twice a month, contact us to schedule a playdate!
