Woman Admits 2,257 Crimes In Four Years
CARDIFF, Wales (AP) _ A 21-year-old woman admitted in court that she committed 2,257 crimes in a four-year spree that netted 291 cars and other goods worth more than $2 million.
Sharon Head, who wrote a 37-page confession after talking to police for 165 hours, was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison Friday by Judge Martin Stephens at Cardiff Crown Court.
″The catalogue of crimes you committed almost defies belief,″ the judge said.
Ms. Head, who has a 5-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter, said she became involved with a gang of criminals as a teen-ager.
″All I can say is that I was a very stupid person and I am deeply sorry,″ she said. ″I want to get all the crimes cleared up. I want to start afresh.″
Ms. Head was arrested after starting a series of fires in a house in Cardiff where she had lived.
She pleaded guilty to one charge of arson, four thefts and four burglaries and asked for 2,248 other offenses of theft, burglary, attempted burglary and stealing cars to be taken into consideration.
She admitted stealing 291 cars, some to order, including Ferraris, Porsches, Jaguars and Range Rovers. Prosecutor Paul Lewis said only 129 have been traced.
Defense attorney Charles Cochard said Ms. Head kept just a small part of the proceeds of her crimes to help care for her children. She once sold a $24,570 car for $567, he said.
