Vermont communities gathering for Town Meeting Day

March 5, 2019

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — People in communities across Vermont are gathering for the annual Town Meeting to vote on and discuss issues of importance to their towns, and beyond.

The Tuesday meetings across the state include issues such as whether to pass local and school budgets and elect local officials.

In some cases, communities issues of importance beyond Vermont. This year, a number of communities are considering whether to ban plastic shopping bags.

Sometimes, local issues dominate the discussion. In Elmore, townspeople are divided about whether to buy a new firetruck for the department. In the cities of Burlington and South Burlington, voters are considering tax measures.
