Rockford Lake near Beatrice remains on health alert
BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — Rockford Lake near Beatrice in southeastern Nebraska remains on health alert because of toxic algae blooms.
The lake has been on a health alert since mid-June, when testing by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality first showed the lake had high levels of toxins.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says testing earlier this week shows the blue-green algae toxins are still a problem.
Skin exposed to the toxin can develop rashes and blisters, and drinking tainted water could cause headaches, nausea and muscle pain.
When a health alert is issued, signs are posted advising the public to use caution, and designated swimming beaches are closed. Recreational boating and fishing are permitted, but the public is warned to use caution and avoid exposure to the water.
