Lotus Awarded $2.3 Million from Software Pirate

SINGAPORE (AP) _ A court has ordered a Singaporean accountant to pay Lotus Development Corp. $2.3 million for selling pirated copies of the company’s software.

Lotus, which spent five years pursuing the case, said Tuesday that the award was one of the highest ever for software piracy.

The accountant, Ong Seow Pheng, was sentenced to seven months in jail in a separate criminal proceeding in 1993 for trademark and copyright infringements.
