COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) _ Missouri Athletic Director Dave Hart expects to be offered the job of commissioner of the Southern Athletic Conference and will take the job if it is offered, the Columbia Tribune reported Monday.

''If everything goes as planned I would take the job,'' Hart told the Tribune.

The Tribune quoted Hart as saying he expected the Southern conference job would be offered to him by the end of the week. He has been athletic director at Missouri for eight years.

The Missouri athletic department would have no comment on the report, said Bob Brendel, assistant sports information director.

Hart, 60, is one of three finalists for the Southern Conference job who were interviewed Nov. 19. Other candidates are Jim Delaney, commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference, and Jerry Miles, director of men's championship events for the NCAA, according to conference spokesman John Geis.

Geis said no final decision had been made on a new commissioner to replace Ken Germann, who is retiring effective June 1, 1986.

The Southern Conference, is moving its headquarters from Charlotte, N.C. to Asheville, N.C., an area of the country Hart has said he would like to retire in.

The Southern Conference is offering a five-year contract with an option to renew every year until Hart is 70.

''I'm interested because I like the new challenge of a commissioner's job,'' said Hart, who came to Missouri from Louisville in 1978.

Hart said declining football attendance which has led to financial instability in the athletic department has nothing to do with his desire to join the Southern Conference.

Attendance at football games fell from a school-record average of 69,867 in 197) to a 14-year low of 47,128 this year. A new football ticket policy instituted by Hart shortly after he joined Missouri has also been blamed for the attendance drop.

Hart said he would not leave Missouri until next spring.

Schools in the Southern Conference are Tennessee-Chattanooga, Appalachian State, East Tennessee State, West Carolina, Davidson, The Citadel, Virginia Military Institute, Furman and Marshall.
