Czech court changes rules on drug possession
PRAGUE (AP) — The Czech Constitutional Court has canceled part of the penal code that allows the government to set rules on the possession of illegal drugs, saying that only Parliament can decide what is illegal.
The government decided in 2010 that it is illegal to possess more than 1.5 grams (0.05 ounces) of heroin or 1 gram (0.035 ounces) of cocaine, while a smaller amount was considered a misdemeanor punishable by a fine. Germany blamed that rule for a surge of cross border drug trafficking of the Czech made crystal meth.
Thursday’s ruling said that the courts should decide what amount of drugs is considered illegal.
