Residents Picking Up The Pieces After Saturday Tornadoes
Undated (AP) _ Residents of western South Dakota and a northern Texas community began restoring order to their lives and homes Sunday after being battered by tornadoes, high wind and hail.
On the edge of South Dakota’s Black Hills, the community of Piedmont, northwest of Rapid City, was among the worst hit. Fire chief Sonny Hemsher said at least two funnel clouds touched down Saturday night and demolished nine mobile homes and as many outbuildings. He said three people were injured.
Inside the Black Hills, hail as big as golf balls pelted Mount Rushmore, and motorists reported getting stuck in drifts of hail around nearby Rockerville.
Southwest of the Black Hills, Edgemont Police Chief Ron Berens said he counted seven tornadoes on the ground, but no one was injured.
At Plainview, Texas, a twister blew over four mobile homes and two people suffered minor injuries, authorities said. Plainview is about 300 miles northwest of Dallas and about 40 miles north of Lubbock.
