LP man charged with robbing Mini Mart
La PORTE – A 21-year-old La Porte man remains behind bars Friday, charged with the armed robbery of a downtown convenience store on Wednesday morning.
According to La Porte Police, a 911 call was received about 9 a.m. Wednesday from the Lincolnway Mini Mart at 205 Lincoln Way about an armed robbery.
Employees told police a man with a handgun robbed the store of an undisclosed amount of money, then fled on foot.
Officers searched the area for the suspect, but were unable to find him.
However, according to Sgt. Bill Degnegaard, “a combination of surveillance video and a witness helped identify” a suspect and his identity “was quickly developed.”
About 4:30 p.m. the same day, Phillip Bumpass was taken into custody at his La Porte home without incident, and charged with robbery, a Level 3 felony, Degnegaard said.
He was being held without bond in the La Porte County Jail and his next hearing was set for Dec. 5 in La Porte Circuit Court.
No one was injured in the robbery, according to police.
A woman working at the Mini Mart on Friday would not comment on the incident.
