Top GOP congressmen are advocating for Trump to pick Rep. John Ratcliffe as AG: report

November 16, 2018

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and a handful of other prominent Republicans are calling for Rep. John Ratcliffe to be appointed as the next attorney general, according to The Hill newspaper Friday.

Mr. McCarthy told The Hill it was ultimately President Trump’s choice, “but one thing I know is John Ratcliffe probably has the best abilities to do the job and most knowledge to do the job.”

Reps. Mark Meadows, Mark Walker, Mike Johnson, and Matt Gaetz have all expressed their strong support for Mr. Ratcliffe, a member of the House Judiciary Committee.

“Certainly having served with Congressman Ratcliffe and having an understanding of how deliberative and purposeful he is with his questions and thoughts that he would make an outstanding AG,” Mr. Meadows told The Hill.

Mr. Trump picked Matthew Whitaker, Jeff Session’s chief of staff, to take his boss’s place as acting attorney general.

Forcing out Mr. Sessions and appointing Mr. Whitaker alarmed critics of the president, who believe Mr. Trump is trying to curtail if not terminate the Mueller investigation. Many argue that Mr. Whitaker’s appointment was unconstitutional, and that the vacancy should have been filled with an individual previously confirmed by the Senate.
