Stan Gelbaugh might quarterback Seahawks in Oakland finale
KIRKLAND, Wash. (AP) _ The Seattle Seahawks might be forced to use Stan Gelbaugh as their quarterback in place of Rick Mirer on Sunday in Oakland.
Mirer, expected to be traded by the Seahawks after this season, did not practice Wednesday because of a bruised left knee.
The Seahawks listed Mirer as questionable _ which means he has a 50 percent chance of playing _ for their season finale.
``He can walk, but he really can’t move,″ coach Dennis Erickson said. ``If he had to play today, he couldn’t play. He can’t drop back.″
With Mirer’s status unclear, the Seahawks gave all the quarterback work in practice to Gelbaugh, who hasn’t played since the final game of the 1994 season.
``If Rick can’t practice on Friday, then obviously we would have to go with Stan,″ Erickson said.
In addition to Mirer, Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Sinclair and running back Chris Warren were listed as questionable by the Seahawks for the Oakland game.
Sinclair has a hyperextended left elbow and Warren aggravated bruised ribs in Seattle’s 20-13 loss Sunday night in Jacksonville. Mirer was injured when he bumped knees with running back Lamar Smith, but did not come out of the Jacksonville game.
``We’ve got a lot of guys who we really don’t know about right now,″ Erickson said.
If Mirer is out and Gelbaugh starts against the Raiders, it would only be Gelbaugh’s 12th start in an NFL career that began in Buffalo in 1986. He made eight of those starts in Seattle in 1992 when the Seahawks had a franchise-worst 2-14 record.
Gelbaugh’s backup would be Gino Torretta, signed by the Seahawks as a free agent Nov. 20 after John Friesz suffered a broken leg.
The Seahawks plan to trade Mirer, the second player picked in the 1993 draft, because they have decided to make Friesz their starting quarterback. They’re 2-7 with Mirer as their starting quarterback this season.
Against Oakland, the Seahawks will be trying to finish with a 7-9 record in Erickson’s second season in Seattle.
Erickson said it was important for the Seahawks to try to win on Sunday. The Raiders have won 11 of the last 13 against Seattle, including a game in the Kingdome in November.
``We’re preparing for this game like we would if it was the first game of the year,″ Erickson said. ``I disagree that it doesn’t mean anything, because any time you compete, somebody wins and somebody loses.″
