Fourteen people from Achille Lauro injured in highway accident

October 19, 1985

KARLSRUHE, West Germany (AP) _ A bus carrying German passengers from the hijacked cruise ship Achille Lauro was involved in a 10-vehicle accident and 14 were injured, police said Friday.

Three people were killed in the pileup Thursday night, but none of the dead was from the Italian liner that was hijacked last week by four Palestinian terrorists during a Mediterranean cruise.

Horst Albrecht, a spokesman for the Frankfurt travel agency that owned the bus, said the vehicle was carrying 34 passengers who had returned home from the cruise that was cut short by the hijackers.

He said the bus was en route to Frankfurt from Genoa, Italy, where the passengers had gone Wednesday to pick up their luggage when the Achille Lauro docked.

There were 73 West Germans taking the cruise on the Achille Lauro, but they all had left the ship for a sightseeing tour to Cairo when it was taken over by the gunmen as it approached Port Said, Egypt.

Police spokesman Lothar Hellriegel said three people in the other vehicles were injured and among the three people seriously injured were the bus driver and a woman passenger.

Killed in the accident were the co-driver of the bus, an employee of the travel agency and the driver of one of the cars.

Hellriegel said the pileup on a high-speed highway south of Karlsruhe began when two trucks collided and one crashed through a barrier into the oncoming lane and struck a car.

The bus and six cars slammed into the wreckage moments later, he added.
