Havasu native dies following speed boat racing accident
LONG BEACH, Calif. — Greg Duff, a speed boat driver who graduated from Lake Havasu High School, died on Wednesday afternoon from injuries suffered during a high-speed crash during a competition last weekend.
According to the Long Beach Press-Telegram, On Sunday during the second day of the Sprint Nationals Boat Races, a competing speed boat went airborne on a turn crashing into Duff’s while both boats were traveling around 100 mph. The other driver wasn’t injured.
Duff, 36, was transported to the ICU with severe head trauma, a broken elbow and a ruptured spleen. An outpouring of support followed across the racing community, with more than $37,000 raised for his family on a GoFundMe page.
Duff’s sister Carrie announced he died in a statement on her Facebook page. She said a celebration of life will be held on Aug. 25 in San Clemente, California.
