SABEW Names Winners in Best of Business Contest

CHICAGO (AP) _ The Society of American Business Editors and Writers named winners Thursday in its second annual best of business contest.

Entries were submitted by a total of 93 publications. Nineteen daily newspapers and five business weeklies were chosen as winners by judges who considered all aspects of business coverage. An additional 27 certificates of merit were awarded to publications for focusing on ideas, section concepts, story execution or other efforts.

The contest was established to help set standards and create role models for outstanding business journalism. Awards will be presented April 30 at the SABEW annual convention in New Orleans.

_The Register-Guard of Eugene, Ore.

Judges included: Becky Bisbee, business editor of the Austin (Texas) American Statesman and a 1994 best in business winner; Jim Jordan, columnist, Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader; and Cheryl Carpenter, assistant managing editor of The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer.
