Custer man dies after striking deer with ATV
A 43-year-old Custer man died after the ATV he was driving struck a deer Sunday morning on Stephens Road south of U.S. 10, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.
Cole said in a statement that emergency first-responders were dispatched at 7:37 a.m. Sunday to the scene with a report of an unresponsive man lying in the road.
The accident remained under investigation Sunday afternoon, but Cole said preliminary findings indicate the Custer man was driving a 2018 Polaris ATV on Stephens Road south of U.S. 10 when he struck a deer. The crash caused the victim to lose control of the vehicle, and it rolled over and ejected the man. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, Cole said.
According to Cole, the man was not wearing a helmet, and speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash. Life EMS and the Custer Fire Department assisted with deputies at the scene.
