Man Convicted in Alcohol Death of 5-Year-Old Boy Gets 10 Years Probation
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) _ The man convicted of killing a 5-year-old boy by giving him bourbon and telling him to ″drink it like a man″ was sentenced Friday to 10 years probation.
Anthony Darron Jimerson, 22, was found guilty of murder late Thursday. Jurors deliberated for 3 1/2 hours Friday before deciding Jimerson’s sentence.
The charge carried a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Prosecutor Richard Alpert said the punishment was fair, considering Jimerson’s age and that he probably didn’t intend to kill Thomas ″Tinky″ Griffin.
Jimerson had been jailed since his arrest last February.
Witnesses said Jimerson gave the boy the liquor and told him to ″drink it like a man″ so he would go to sleep, allowing the man to be alone with the child’s mother, Patricia Griffin, 31.
She faces trial next month on a charge of causing injury to a child by gross negligence. An ambulance wasn’t called for the boy until 16 hours after he drank the alcohol.
The boy had a blood alcohol level of .55 percent, or five times the legal limit for driving in Texas, doctors said.
