August 23, 2018

Amtrak Northeast service has been restored hours after overhead Eversource electrical lines came down on the railroad power lines Wednesday night.

The incident that happened in Old Saybrook, forced the shutdown of all trains through area.

Train passengers were evacuated and placed on buses.

The Old Saybrook Fire Department said the downed wires caused a number of small fires along the tracks.

No injuries were reported.

Around midnight, Amtrak reported that emergency personnel was able to control the incident.

Rail service has been partially restored, allowing trains to travel through the area with reduced speeds.

Because Eversource had to de-energize the lines to make repairs, about 3,000 customers lost power in Old Saybrook and Westbrook.
