Fort Bend ISD trustees consider $10M land purchase in Rosharon for new high school
The Fort Bend ISD School Board will meet to discuss spending $10 million to purchase an 80-acre parcel in Rosharon for construction of the district’s 12th high school campus expected to open in 2022. The vote comes after months of planning and discussion over plans to re-draw boundaries between Hightower, Ridge Point and Willowridge High Schools to help ease overcrowding at Ridge Point High School in Sienna Plantation near Missouri City. Administrators originally proposed plans to move as many as 3,000 students but now recommend postponing high school re-zoning for until the 2020-21 school year, according to agenda documents.
Trustees are also expected to vote whether to approve new technical certification programs for Willowridge and Hightower Schools and a new early college high school at Marshall High School. The proposed programs had drawn complaints from parents from Marshall High School, who lobbied for increased community input in the process.
Two trustee positions are up for re-election and board members are expected to approve a May 14 school board election to decide Position 3, currently held by Jim Rice, and Position 7, held by Dave Rosenthal. Trustees have not announced plans to include Position 5 on the ballot or proposed any new member appointment to fill the seat vacated after KP George won election to Fort Bend County Judge last November. In a recent letter to trustees, George urged board members to put the empty seat on the ballot and appoint a replacement to serve until them as has been done in years past.
Per state law, trustees can wait up to 180 days to appoint a replacement or call a special election to allow voters to decide.
The meeting is open to the public and residents are allowed to speak before the board during public comment. Those who would like to speak are asked to arrive early and sign in. The meeting is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at the Fort Bend ISD Administrative Building located at 16431 Lexington Blvd. in Sugar Land.
