Carney skirts GOP critics with loan help to federal workers
DOVER, Del. (AP) — Democratic Gov. John Carney has skirted opposition from Republican lawmakers to offer state-guaranteed loans to federal workers in Delaware affected by the government shutdown.
Carney announced late Thursday that the Delaware State Housing Authority would guarantee loans to federal workers of up to one month’s net pay, with no credit check required and few strings attached. DSHA would be on the hook for up to $80,000 in loan guarantees.
The move came one day after bill authorizing Delaware’s Office of Management and Budget to partner with banks and nonprofit providers to establish a temporary loan program with state loan guarantees failed in the Senate because of Republican opposition.
Administration officials say about 500 federal employees who live in Delaware continue to go unpaid during the shutdown.
