Area anglers have plenty for which to be thankful
BULLHEAD CITY — Rusty Braun took the occasion of the week of Thanksgiving to offer thanks.
“What a great area we live in,” said Braun, proprietor of Riviera Marina in Bullhead City. “And yep, we have some fantastic fishing goin on. Yep, it’s mostly stripers and trout here along the Colorado River below Davis Dam.”
Area trout anglers can be thankful for the Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery, which furnishes a generous supply of rainbow trout to the river in Bullhead City.
“The Willow Beach fish hatchery has been stocking some nice rainbows,” Braun said.
And fishermen have noticed. Jerry Ward got his limit of five, using his favorite spinners, while fishing from the shore in the Rotary Park area.
“I heard that power bait and night crawlers were also producing limits,” Braun said. “Another couple of great spots for you trout anglers is our Community Park and the stocking site at Davis Camp.”
As for stripers, the action is good both at Lake Mohave and on the river.
“Up on Lake Mohave the striper bite is picking up,” Braun said. “I heard last that Telephone Cove was doing OK. On the lake, you might have to move around a bit to find out where the fish are feeding. There have been a lot of shad schools that the stripers and various birds have been feeding on.
“No work on the largemouth bass or smallmouth bass on the lake for this time of year.”
On the river, John Mynk and his sons Evan, 9, and Ross, 8, took advantage of their opportunity to bring in a nice collection of small stripers.
“They were grinning from ear to ear holding them up high,” Braun said. “Pretty neat.”
Braun said the Mynks were fishing from a boat using anchovies in the upper Big Bend area.
