Restaurant: Teen who died in chase had stolen tip jar

January 2, 2019

NORCROSS, Ga. (AP) — A teenager who died in a crash was trying to get away from police after allegedly stealing a tip jar from an Atlanta-area pizza restaurant.

In a news release, Gwinnett County police say 18-year-old Jaylen Purge of Duluth died Sunday night after crashing his car into a retention pond.

Italian Pie restaurant manager Juan Angeles tells WSB-TV that Purge grabbed the store’s tip jar with about $100 in it and ran outside. Angeles and a cook ran after him and a passing officer began driving after Purge’s vehicle.

Authorities say the car disappeared a few blocks away. Police later found the car flipped over and was almost fully submerged in a pond. Purge was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.
