Russian Sets World Snatch Record

August 20, 2004

ATHENS, Greece (AP) _ Natalia Zabolotnaia of Russia set two women’s 165-pound (75kg) weightlifting world records Friday, but still did not win the Olympic gold medal.

Zabolotnaia lifted 264 1/2 pounds (120kg) in the snatch to break the record of 270 pounds (122.5kg) set minutes before by gold medalist Pawina Thongsuk of Thailand.

Zabolotnaia also broke the world record for total lift with 601 pounds (272.5kg), breaking the 2002 record of 595 pounds (270kg) by China’s Sun Ruiping.

Thongsuk’s total also was 601 pounds, but Zabolotnaia is credited with the world record for reaching it first.

The snatch world record going into Friday’s competition was 264 1/2 pounds (120kg), set in April by Tatyana Khromova of Kazakhstan.

The previous Olympic records were the standards of 253 1/2 pounds (115kg) in the snatch and 567 1/2 pounds (257.5kg) for total lift.
