High school girls soccer roundup for Oct. 24, 2018: Upper St. Clair edges Pine-Richland in OT

Landy Mertz scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime to lift No. 4-seeded Upper St. Clair to a 4-3 victory over No. 5 Pine-Richland (15-4) in the WPIAL Class 4A girls soccer quarterfinals Wednesday at Upper St. Clair.

Nikki Gibbons added two goals, and Mertz also had an assist for the Panthers (14-3), who will play No. 1 Seneca Valley in the semifinals Saturday at a time and site to be determined.

Peters Township 2, Butler 1 -- Despite trailing at halftime, No. 3 Peters Township battled back and defeated No. 11 Butler (11-6-2) in the WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinals.

The Golden Tornado struck first in the 11th minute off Gabrielle Boden’s goal inside the box. However, Youngstown State recruit Regan LaVigna and Bucknell recruit Hannah Stuck tallied second-half goals to spark the Indians (16-3). It’s the first time Peters Township has reached the semifinals since 2013.

Peters Township will play No. 2 Norwin in the semifinals Saturday.

Seneca Valley 6, Mt. Lebanon 1 -- Seneca Valley scored five goals in the second half to secure a WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinal victory over No. 8 Mt. Lebanon (11-6-3).

Breanna Valentovish, Ashley Rea, Lauren Sileo, Julia Redilla, Ally Smith and Mia Zec all scored for the top-seeded Raiders (15-2).

Class 3A

Hampton 1, Ambridge 0 (OT) -- Courtney Coholich scored on a penalty kick with 21 seconds left in the first overtime to give No. 5 Hampton (16-4) a WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinal victory over No. 4 Ambridge (14-3-2).

Mars 3, Montour 0 -- Taylor Hamlett, Ellie Coffield and Samantha King scored to guide No. 1 Mars (17-0) to a WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinal win over No. 9 Montour (12-7) at Seneca Valley.

The Planets will play Hampton in the semifinals.

South Fayette 3, West Allegheny 1 -- No. 14 South Fayette used a strong second half and stellar play from the midfield to get revenge on Section 4 foe West Allegheny (12-6) in the WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinals at Peters Township.

The Lions got goals from Helina Van Bibber, Annalisa Mariano, and from a corner kick that went untouched late in the second half. The lone goal for West Allegheny was tallied by freshman Mackenzie Evers, a Pitt recruit.

South Fayette will play No. 2 Oakland Catholic in the semifinals.

Class 2A

Avonworth 1, Waynesburg 0 (SO) -- No. 5 Avonworth edged Waynesburg 5-4 in a shootout to secure a WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinal victory over the No. 4 Raiders (13-6).

Avonworth (13-5-2) will play South Park in the semifinals.

Hopewell 4, Burrell 2 -- Raychel Speicher had a pair of goals for the Vikings and Cristy Senskey and Abigayle Hvizdak scored a goal apiece as No. 2 Hopewell (14-1-1) won a WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinal game. Skylar Dale and Cara Fiore scored for No. 7 Burrell (13-3-2).

Hopewell will play Deer Lakes in the semifinals.

South Park 6, Freeport 1 -- Haleigh Finale and Avery Miklos each scored twice as No. 1 South Park (17-2) rolled to a WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinal win over No. 8 Freeport (11-7-2).

Sidney Shemanski scored to put No. 8 Freeport (11-7-2) ahead 1-0, but the host Eagles responded with six unanswered goals.

Class A

Bentworth 3, Bishop Canevin 2 -- Paige Marshalek scored less than six minutes into overtime to lead No. 3 Bentworth past No. 6 Bishop Canevin in a WPIAL Class A quarterfinal matchup at Waynesburg Central’s Raider Field.

Marshalek had two goals in the victory while Jocelyn Timlin had a goal that tied the game at 2-2 with 15:02 left in regulation.

Caroline Colantonio and Lauren Kirsch each scored for the Crusaders (11-4-1).

Bentworth (16-2) advances to the semifinals to face second-seeded Greensburg Central Catholic Saturday.

Freedom 5, Springdale 3 -- Michaela Watkins and Myla Sharpless had two goals apiece and Jaden Sharpless scored once as top-seeded Freedom (18-1) won a WPIAL Class A quarterfinal game at Hopewell.

Sydni Henley scored 15 seconds in to put the Dynamos (11-7) in front 1-0, but Freedom stormed back to score four consecutive goals.

Lilly Iadicicco and Erica Crail scored second-half goals for No. 8 Springdale.

Shady Side Academy 9, Seton La Salle 0 -- Autumn Casey scored three goals, and Sophia McMahon added two as No. 5 Shady Side Academy (11-3) won a quarterfinal game at Deer Lakes.

The Indians will play No. 1 Freedom in the semifinals.

No. 4 Seton LaSalle finished the season 10-5-2.
