BOL, Croatia (AP) _ Fifth-seeded Corina Morariu of Boca Raton, Fla., opened the defense of her $170,000 Croatian Bol Ladies Open title Monday by defeating Petra Mandula of Hungary 6-3, 6-4.

Cara Black of Zimbabwe, seeded eighth, defeated Miriam Oremans of the Netherlands 6-3, 6-2 and Angeles Montolio of Spain ousted Sandra Kleinova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-3.

Only three matches were played on the first day of the tournament that has three of the world's top 20 competitors, all from France _ ninth-ranked Julie Halard-Decugis, No. 11 Sandrine Testud and No. 17 Amelie Mauresmo.
