CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The Carson City sheriff says a 34-year-old transient with a long criminal history remains hospitalized after he was shot by a deputy during an altercation in a casino parking lot.

Sheriff Ken Furlong says Michael Cruz is expected to be booked on charges including attempted murder. He's currently under tight security at a Reno hospital.

Furlong says Rivera allegedly slashed Deputy Chris Rivera in the head when he confronted Cruz Friday night while investigating a report of a suspicious person near the Carson City Nugget.

He says the 15-year member of the force has been released from the hospital.

Furlong says Cruz most recently was arrested in Douglas County on suspicion of trespassing in February. He's also been previously arrested in Nevada and California on charges including domestic battery, and carrying a concealed weapon.
