Convention Mac and Cheese Lands on EBay

September 3, 2004

NEW YORK (AP) _ One of the most talked about freebies at this summer’s political conventions _ macaroni and cheese shaped like political mascots _ has ended up on auction giant eBay.

Kraft Foods North America Inc. produced two versions of its ``limited convention edition″ mac and cheese, one for each political party. Instead of the traditional elbow-shaped pasta, the Republican version has elephants and stars; the Democrats got donkeys.

The boxes resemble Kraft’s traditional royal-blue 5.5-ounce package. But instead of a spoon brimming with cooked macaroni on the front, the Republican variety is decorated with a smiling, suited elephant holding a ``REPUBLICANS in 2004!″ sign.

During the Republican convention, which ended Thursday, delegates and the media received the macaroni in a black bag along with other goodies such as M&M’s in patriotic hues, a pedometer, breath strips and a gym pass. About 22,000 gift bags were said to be distributed.

When the Chicago-based food giant first introduced its political macaroni _ which is not sold in stores _ in 1996, it ``quickly became a collectors item,″ said spokeswoman Renee Zahery.

Sellers, it seems, agree.

One described the GOP version as a ``true treasure for anyone who wants to remember the 2004 Republican National Convention.″ Late Thursday, eight bidders had pushed the price up to $29, with just under a day left before the auction ends.
