BOSTON -- Gov. Charlie Baker will attend the state funeral service Wednesday for former President George H.W. Bush, joining the incumbent and former presidents, other figures in American government and world leaders to remember the late Republican president.

Baker will leave for Washington, D.C. on Wednesday morning and return to Massachusetts on Wednesday evening, the governor’s office said. Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito will serve as acting governor while Baker is out of the state.

Bush, the 41st president of the United States and father to the 43rd, died at his Houston home Friday at the age of 94.

Born in Milton, raised in Connecticut and a graduate of Phillips Academy in Andover, Bush enlisted in the U.S. Navy shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and was a decorated Navy fighter pilot before starting his studies at Yale. He is the last president to have served in World War II.

“President George H. W. Bush was a devoted public servant who served our country for decades in vast capacities and our hearts break to learn of his passing,” Baker said in a statement on Saturday.

“We will not only remember his incredible legacy as a war hero and our 41st President, but celebrate his humble, kind and ambitious spirit that will be sorely missed.”

President Donald Trump, who has not had a good relationship with the Bush family, also plans to attend Wednesday’s service at the Washington National Cathedral but is not slated to speak at the ceremony.

President George W. Bush, former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and former U.S. Sen. Alan Simpson of Wyoming are expected to eulogize the late president.

The Bush funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. before a departure ceremony at Joint Base Andrews. Bush’s casket will be flown back to Texas for burial at his presidential library.
