Girls Testify of Sexual Acts with Man Who ‘Bought, Married’ One of Them
HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) _ Two girls testified Tuesday they had engaged in sexual acts with a man who allegedly bought and ``married″ one of them.
Jeffrey Sunnycalb, 33, is charged with rape and corrupting another with drugs.
Authorities say Sunnycalb lived with an 11-year-old girl _ now 12 _ for more than six months in his trailer home. He bought the girl from her parents in exchange for beer and cigarettes, and she scribbled a ``marriage certificate″ on a piece of paper, police said.
Sunnycalb used gifts and affection to persuade that girl, and a 13-year-old, to have sex with him, police said. The older girl is now 14.
As the trial began Tuesday, each girl testified that she had engaged in sexual acts with Sunnycalb more than 10 times. They also said they did not tell authorities about their relationship because they did not want to get Sunnycalb in trouble.
The younger girl said she wanted to live with Sunnycalb because he bought her things, picked her up from school and promised to take care of her _ things her parents did not do.
``You love him now, don’t you?″ defense lawyer Christopher Atkins asked her. ``Yeah,″ she replied.
If convicted, Sunnycalb could be sentenced to 10 to 25 years in prison on each rape charge. He is being held on $50,000 bond.
He initially pleaded innocent by reason of insanity, but withdrew that plea last fall. Court-appointed psychiatrists concluded in September that he was mentally competent to stand trial.
The mother and stepfather of the 11-year-old girl were found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of child endangering.
