Body-camera maker has financial ties to police chiefs

March 3, 2015

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Taser International, the stun-gun maker that is becoming a leading supplier of body cameras for police, has cultivated financial ties to police chiefs whose departments have bought the recording devices.

A review by The Associated Press shows Taser is covering airfare and hotel stays for police chiefs who travel to speak at marketing conferences. It is also hiring some recently retired chiefs as consultants, sometimes months after their cities signed contracts with Taser.

The relationships raise questions about whether chiefs are acting objectively in their dealings with Taser.

Taser says that its relationships are appropriate and that users of its products are the best people to talk about them.
