Body of hiker found in cave in Puerto Rico

July 8, 2013

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rico officials say a 23-year-old Florida native was swept away by a fast-flowing river and her body has been located in a cave.

The U.S. island’s emergency management agency is identifying the dead woman as Cristine Cousqui. They say she was originally from Florida but had been living in the Condado area of San Juan, Puerto Rico’s capital.

Officials say she was on a Sunday hiking excursion with 11 companions in the eastern town of Naguabo when she was swept away by the swollen river.

Emergency workers have spotted Cousqui’s body inside a small cave. But authorities could not recover the body due to the rushing river and poor visibility.

Officials say recovery efforts will resume Monday. Emergency personnel are staying in the wilderness area overnight.
