Cal Poly SLO 78, LaSalle 71

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) _ Mike Wozniak scored 21 points and Damien Levesque added 15 as Cal Poly San Luis Obispo overcame a 33-point effort by Donnie Carr to defeat LaSalle 78-71 Saturday in the opening round of the Golden Bear Classic.

LaSalle led 47-40 early in the second half, but Cal Poly went on a 12-2 run to take a 52-49 edge. Shanta Cotright sparked the Mustangs with a three-point play, followed by a steal on the inbounds pass and a layup to give Cal Poly its three-point lead.

The game see-sawed back and forth until Cal Poly broke a 61-61 tie with just less than five minutes to play on Wozniak’s three-pointer. The Mustangs made their free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

Cotright added 14 points for the Mustangs. Levesque also had 11 rebounds.

Cal Poly led for all but four seconds of the first half, led by Wozniak’s eight points.

LaSalle’s Mike Gizzi, who finished with 15 points, hit a 10-foot jumper with four seconds left in the half to give the Explorers their first lead of the game.

Carr, the nation’s leading scorer, set a tournament scoring record with his 33-point performance. He scored 20 in the second half.

The second game of the tournament featured host California and Howard. Cal Poly meets the winner of the late game for the championship.
