FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) _ Steve Ralston scored on a first-half penalty kick and collected an assist on a second-half goal as the New England Revolution beat the Colorado Rapids 3-1 on Saturday night.
New England (10-12-8), unbeaten in its last five matches, clinched its fifth straight MLS playoff berth.
Ralston scored on a penalty kick in the fourth minute, his sixth goal of the season. He set up Jose Manuel Abundis for New England’s second goal in the 58th minute.
Rapids midfielder Clint Mathis was red-carded in the 65th minute and Clint Dempsey scored his seventh goal of the season for New England in the 79th minute, beating Colorado goalie Joe Cannon.
Colorado (11-13-6) broke a 384-minute scoreless span when Kyle Beckerman scored in the 90th minute on a penalty kick.
