McCaw sidelined for 3 weeks with rib injury
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — All Blacks captain Richie McCaw may have played the last two tests of the just-completed series whitewash of England with a broken rib, which will cause him to miss three weeks of Super Rugby.
McCaw cracked or broke a rib during the first or second test of the three-test series which New Zealand won 3-0, coach Steve Hansen said on Tuesday.
McCaw played for 80 minutes in all three matches.
He was first thought to be suffering from bruising, and cleared to play on Saturday at Waikato Stadium, where the All Blacks won 36-13. An X-ray on Monday revealed the injury was more serious, Hansen told Radio Sport.
Super Rugby resumes on Friday after a four-week break for the June internationals, and McCaw’s three-week absence is a severe blow to the Christchurch-based Crusaders, who are first in the New Zealand conference.
