FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) _ Agee Ward had 26 points and 15 rebounds Saturday night as Cal State Fullerton, minus two regulars, surprised No. 21 New Mexico State 89-81.
Joe Small had 21 points, including two free throws in the closing seconds, and Bruce Bowen added 20 for the Titans (11-5, 4-3 Big West Conference).
Reggie Jordan had 21 points and Michael New added 15 before both fouled out as the Aggies (12-2, 4-1) saw their six-game winning streak end.
Fullerton was playing without starting center Aaron Wilhite and forward Ron Caldwell, both out with injuries.
Regardless, the Titans shot a season-high 57 percent and the Aggies shot a season-low 38 percent. Fullerton took an 11-10 lead five minutes into the game on a bucket by Bowen, which triggered a 14-2 run.
The Aggies pulled to 30-26 on a basket by Tracey Ware. But Fullerton pulled out to a 42-33 halftime lead.
The Titans’ biggest lead was 75-58 with 3:19 to play. The Aggies combined a couple of steals and took advantage of missed Fullerton free throws in a 21-10 run that made it 81-79 with 43 seconds to play.
But Small hit two free throws and Kevin Ahsmuhs had a dunk to ice the win.
