HONG KONG (AP) _ An intense earthquake hit Indonesia early Monday, but there was no immediate report of damage or injuries, the Hong Kong Observatory.

The magnitude 6.2 quake was centered undersea 350 miles southeast of the town of Palu on Sulawesi island, the observatory said in a statement. The town is 930 miles northeast of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.

Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago nation, is prone to frequent seismic upheavals. A 6.5-magnitude quake that struck the remote island of Banggai on May 4 killed at least 46 people and left more than 30,000 people homeless.
