Alabama 102, Ga. Southern 70

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) _ Yolanda Watkins scored 25 points and Betsy Harris 21 as Alabama routed Southern Conference champion Georgia Southern 102-70 Wednesday night in the first round of the NCAA Mideast Regional.

Alabama (22-8), which plays North Carolina on Sunday, went ahead 16-4 in the first half behind a 12-0 run capped by Harris’ 3-pointer.

The Crimson Tide gained its biggest lead of the first half at 32-11 when Shondra Fuller scored from underneath the basket. Georgia Southern (21-9) closed to 47-34 at halftime.

In the second half, Alabama quickly stretched its lead to 61-40. Georgia Southern closed to 63-54 with 11:14 to go when Andrea Autrey scored off a rebound. But Alabama surged to 90-65 with 3:33 left on Harris’ fastbreak layup.

Niesa Johnson added 10 points for Alabama. Monique McClelland and Jill Dunn scored 11 points each fo Georgia Southern.
