New York Yankees manager Joe Torre confirmed Thursday that Orlando ``El Duque'' Hernandez will start Game 1 of the World Series on Saturday night. Hernandez went 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA in three starts against Texas and Boston and was the MVP of the ALCS. In five career playoff starts, Hernandez is 4-0 with an 0.97 ERA.

SERIES ARMS

Atlanta manager Bobby Cox revealed his starters for the World Series, choosing 1995 Series MVP Tom Glavine (14-11) for Game 1. Greg Maddux (19-9) will start Game 2 for the Braves with Kevin Millwood (18-7) and John Smoltz (11-8) scheduled for Games 3 and 4, respectively, at Yankee Stadium.

By a 2-1 margin, most people think Pete Rose should be reinstated to baseball, even though many believe he did gamble on his sport, according to an Associated Press poll released Thursday. Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Tony Gwynn worked with the FBI to help catch forgers who were selling faked items in the sports memorabilia market, according to a report broadcast Thursday. During the two-year undercover investigation known as ``Operation Bullpen,'' the baseball stars helped the FBI seize several tractor trailer loads of forgeries from around the country.

SERIES HERO RETURNS

Jim Leyritz, a utility player for the New York Yankees who hit a pivotal home run in the 1996 World Series, was placed on the Series roster on Thursday in place of outfielder Shane Spencer. Leyritz was removed in favor of Spencer for ALCS due to Paul O'Neill's injury.

SLUGGER HURT

Houston third baseman Ken Caminiti sustained three fractures in his lower back after falling from a deer blind during a South Texas hunting trip on Wednesday. It should take eight weeks for Caminiti to recuperate.

SEEING DOLLAR BILLS

New York mayor Rudolph Guiliani announced Thursday that the World Series could generate as much as $37.8 million in revenue for the city.
