Dems pick Springfield for state convention, snub mayor
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Massachusetts Democrats will hold their annual convention in Springfield but are snubbing the city’s Democratic mayor because he endorsed the state’s Republican governor.
Mayor Domenic Sarno said in a statement Tuesday that he was happy to learn the state Democratic Party had chosen to hold its 2019 gathering in Springfield on Sept. 14. But he also revealed that he had not been invited to speak at the convention because of his support for Gov. Charlie Baker in last November’s election.
Sarno was one of several Democratic mayors around the state who endorsed Baker over Democratic nominee Jay Gonzalez. Sarno praised Baker’s bipartisan approach.
Sarno said conventions are “always good news” for Springfield, but added he would spend the day with his family and at neighborhood events.
