Eagles downed by Whippets in RVC opener; Bluejays fall to CWC

November 18, 2018

JEFFERSON – Jefferson got off to a good start and held a one-point halftime advantage but Whitewater’s second-half surge proved to be the difference.

The Jefferson girls basketball team lost its Rock Valley Conference opener to visiting Whitewater 52-39 on Friday night.

Jefferson’s junior Olivia Ganser totaled 15 points and sophomore teammate Ainsley Howard tallied 10.

Whitewater (1-1 overall, 1-0 conference) received a game-high 16 points from Cassidy Laue.

“Going into halftime we were in pretty good shape, we were up one and had just made our run,” Jefferson girls basketball coach Evan Hibbs said. “Things were going pretty smooth. We hung close with them for most of the second half and right at the end they were able to pull away with it.”

For the Eagles, sophomore Claire Beck finished with eight points and sophomore Josie Peterson notched six.

“Some of our shots didn’t fall,” Hibbs said. “Defensively, a couple of their kids started hitting shots. They got some confidence on offense, therefore they got more confident on defense.”

Whitewater’s Abby Grosinske and Kacie Carollo each scored 15 points.

Jefferson (1-1, 0-1) plays at Evansville on Tuesday in RVC play at 7:15 p.m.
