Philly To Curb Rowdy Eagles Fans

November 20, 1997

PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ A warning to unruly Philadelphia Eagles fans: Anyone getting drunk or violent during home games will be whisked to a special court set up in Veterans Stadium and forced to pay a big fine on the spot. Troublemakers could land in jail and even lose their precious season tickets.

Undercover police officers will roam the stadium wearing the colors of opposing teams _ clothes that some fans apparently see as a big ``Beat Me″ sign.

Mayor Edward Rendell and Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie joined City Council members and municipal judges Thursday in announcing measures to root out troublemaking fans. The steps came after one fan was charged with firing a flare into the crowd and another reported being attacked during a Monday night football game last week.

Municipal judges volunteered to serve at a special nuisance court in the stadium starting Sunday for the game with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Fines for those convicted will range up to $300. Season ticket holders will have to forfeit their tickets if found guilty of misconduct or if they let disorderly friends use their seats.
