Siriwat Stops Yamaguchi For WBA Junior Flyweight Title
OSAKA, Japan (AP) _ Thailand’s Pitchinoi Siriwat stopped Japan’s Keiji Yamaguchi with a right hook at 2:45 of the second round tonight to take the World Boxing Association’s junior flyweight title.
Siriwat, 16-1 with 10 knockouts, missed with a left before catching Yamaguchi (20-2) with the right hook to the jaw that sent the champion crashing to his back, with his head hitting the canvas.
Yamaguchi, making the second defense of the title he won from Panama’s Carlos Murillo on May 21, tried to continue, but Italian referee Renato Caddeo elected to stop the fight.
Siriwat weighed 106 3/4 pounds, one less than Yamaguchi.
