IAAF Ratifies 3,000-Meter Records

MONTE CARLO, Monaco (AP) _ Two world records in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase set by Romania’s Cristina Iloc-Casandra were ratified by track and field’s world governing body Tuesday.

Iloc-Casandra set her first mark of 9 minutes, 43.64 seconds, Aug. 7 at Bucharest, Romania, then lowered it Aug. 30 at Reims, France, running 9:40.20.

The previous world record of 9:48.88 was held by Yelena Motalova of Russia, set July 31, 1999. This was the inaugural world record in the new women’s event.
