Man arrested after leading police to woman’s body parts
LAREDO, Texas (AP) _ A man took police on a gruesome tour around the city, pointing out pieces of a woman’s body he left in different places, police said.
Luis Salinas, 30, was charged with murder and held on $1 million bond Saturday in the death of his girlfriend, Elisa Costilla.
Salinas admitted killing Ms. Costilla, 31, in an Austin apartment Thursday and driving her body 220 miles to Laredo, where Ms. Costilla had recently left to move in with Salinas.
An off-duty firefighter found a suitcase containing her torso on a roadside Friday morning. Ms. Costilla’s identification was nearby.
Salinas was found driving her car in Laredo Friday night. He ran away when police pulled the car over, but was caught in a tree after a brief chase.
Salinas later took police around Laredo, showing them where five other parts of Ms. Costilla’s body had been discarded alongside different roads, Laredo police spokesman Tony Reyes said.
Ms. Costilla’s head was found in a plastic bag near a residential area, her pelvis and legs were found in a trash bin a few blocks away and her arms were found in a bag along the interstate.
Authorities were conducting an autopsy to determine how Ms. Costilla, a social services worker who had entered a doctoral program at the University of Texas, was killed.
``As for why he did any of this _ we don’t know,″ Reyes said.
