Canisius 14, Iona 7
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) _ Nick Adinolfi carried the ball a school-record 50 times for 145 yards and two touchdowns to propel Canisius over Iona 14-7 on Saturday.
The Golden Griffins rallied from a 7-point deficit against their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival to snap a three-game home field losing streak.
Iona went ahead early after Adinolfi fumbled late in the first quarter. Jeff Bridges took the loose ball 51 yards for the score, giving the Gaels (0-4, 0-2) their first lead in four games this year.
Momentum switched when Iona’s Whitney Epps fumbled a punt return at the Canisius five-yard line early in the fourth quarter. The turnover set up a one-yard score by Adinolfi.
Canisius (2-2, 2-1) forced six Iona turnovers and held Iona to 130 net yards and four first downs in the game.
Canisius took possession midway through the fourth quarter, and Adinolfi gained nine and seven yards on the first two plays of the drive. Bryan Roland, making his first college start at quarterback, then hit Garrick Loveria on an 18-yard pass.
Seven plays later, Adinolfi’s one-yard plunge gave Canisius the lead with 6:38 left to play.
