City-Wide Open Studios: 1 day less but still full of art
For New Haven’s arts scene, City-Wide Open Studios is like baseball’s playoffs and World Series, played out over three weekends in October. And this one’s a tad tighter than the baseball saga.
After many years of the three arts weekends, the festival was expanded to four weekends the previous two years. But “artists reported that they sensed that audiences were tired by the fourth week,” said Helen Kauder, executive director of Artspace, which runs CWOS. So the fest will lose a weekend but just one day since it’s picking up a preview day during its Alternative Spaces weekend.
CWOS begins with a Party in the Streets/Opening Reception at Artspace on Orange Street Friday, Oct. 5, followed on Saturday and Sunday by Erector Square Weekend in Fair Haven (site of many artist studios).
Weekend two is split between Westville Oct. 13 and private studios in New Haven, West Haven, North Haven and Hamden from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 14. And the capper, after skipping a week, is Alternative Spaces Weekend Oct. 27-28, taking place in the old Bayer site in Orange, now a bustling Yale West Campus (appropriate because the year’s theme is “wellbeing”), also noon to 6 p.m.
“Three weeks is still a bit of a marathon,” writes Kauder in an email, “but feels right and it brings more artists to the private studio/Westville weekend. The hub exhibition at Artspace, with one work by every participant, will be up for the same amount of time, from Oct 5-28.”
